Located North of Spring Valley and East of La Mesa is El Cajon.  Development in El Cajon began in 1869 with the construction of a single hotel offering lodging for those travelling between San Diego and Julian during the Gold Rush.  Up through the 1930s the majority of El Cajon was agricultural land for grapes and citrus.

Today, El Cajon is home to over 100,000 residents with notable sites including the Parkway Plaza shopping mall, and Sycuan Casino.
