Located East of El Cajon and West of Descanso is Alpine.  Alpine maintains an elevation of approximately 2,000 feet and is located 30 miles inland from Downtown San Diego.  A government survey during World War I concluded that Alpine had the best climate in the United States.  Alpine's path from stagecoach stop to small town was slow and steady beginning in the late 19th century up through the completion of Interstate 8 in 1969.
